The Assessment of Distortions (Focus: Wrath & Human Respect)
Surveying the Collateral Damage
Last week, you entered the Cloud of Unknowing. You forced your intellect to surrender its arrogant need to map the mystery of God, striking down your ego's brilliant rationalizations with a single anchor word. You have stripped the body and silenced the mind.
But as your internal vision clears, a new, agonizing reality comes into focus: your attachment did not happen in a vacuum.
For weeks, you have been mapping how your ego has lied to you. Now, you must look at how your ego has lied to, manipulated, and harmed others. The Imago Dei is fundamentally relational—it is an image of a Triune God who exists in perfect, self-giving communion. Therefore, any spiritual disorder that fragments you internally will inevitably distort how you relate to the people around you.
This week, you will look at the collateral damage of your attachment through two specific, destructive lenses: Wrath and Human Respect.
The Twin Distortions
When the ego feels the ache of the Void and is desperate to consume its keystone attachment, it views other people not as human beings carrying the Divine Image, but as obstacles to be removed or tools to be used.
Wrath (The Aggressive Distortion) is not just getting angry. Wrath is the ego’s violent defense mechanism. When someone threatened your attachment, interrupted your rigid routine, or exposed your shame, you lashed out. You violated boundaries, used harsh words, or wielded silent treatment as a weapon to protect your sovereignty. Wrath is how your ego actively dominates others to protect its comfort.
Human Respect (The Passive Distortion) is the cowardly compromise of truth. It is caring more about the opinions, approval, or comfort of other people than the reality of God. To protect your attachment or hide your Shadow, you people-pleased, lied by omission, or went along with toxic behaviors. You treated the opinions of others as your ultimate judge, effectively making them a false idol.
